Much of Jesus' journey is gathering a crowd, often through performing miracles, and then speaking to the people around him to show that he is the Christ and to spread the message of the New covenant.
In this case, while Jesus was passing through Sychar on his way to Galilee, he stopped to drink from Jacobs' Well, who was a direct descendant of Abraham.
While he was at the Well, he spoke with an Israelite Samaritan Woman who was already there. As they talked, Jesus shared the New Covenant with her, and because he's the Son of Christ and knows all, dropped that he knows that she has had 5 husbands and is leading an immoral life.
This shocked her and proved to her that he was a prophet. She then went out into the city and gathered all the people to come and see the Messiah. They then came and listened to the new covenant and were converted.
Jesus surprised the disciples by speaking to a Samatarian as it was known that the Jews did not interact with Samatarians, as Samatarians reject the Rabbi-written Talmud (amongst other disagreements).
Jesus breaking this norm shows the universality of the Christian faith. Even those of misplaced pre-existing faith can, and should, be converted to the Christianity. Even Samatarians, Jews, Muslims, and all other faiths thereof or without.
This [likely] came to be one of the reasons the Jews did not accept Christ as their messiah, despite fulfilling the prophecies that Abraham spoke of.
